During the winter, the Chaparral climate (also known as the Mediterranean climate) is a mild and moist season, but isn't rainy. Whilst the summer season is very hot and dry. The temperature is usually mild but can change to be very hot or near freezing. The temperature ranges between 1 degrees Celsius to 37 degrees Celsius. Chaparrals only get about 10 to 17 inches of rain each year. In which, most of the rain is from winter season.
Due, to the long period of the dry and hot weather only plants with small hard leaves survive, such as Scrub Oaks. Many of the leaves on the plants are hairy, so that they are able to collect the moisture from the air and be able to use it.
The Chaparral has many fires, because of the extreme heat and dryness. Most of the plants have adapted to the harsh weather conditions and have also adapted to the fires.
The Chaparral exists in the mid-latitude climate and lies in a belt of prevailing westerly winds. Hense, is why Chaparrals are usually found in the west sides of continents. Chaparrals climate occurs in central and southern coast of California; the coastal areas of the Mediterranean Sea; coastal, western and southern Australia; the Chilean coast in South America and Cape town of South Africa.
